You might need a tooth extraction if you’re experiencing significant tooth decay or tooth pain. When you’re in pain, it means something is wrong, and an extraction could be an appropriate solution.

Signs that you should consider a tooth extraction include

• You have a cavity that is too large to fill.
• Your tooth is badly chipped or broken.
• Your teeth are crowded.
• You have a loose tooth.
• Gum disease has caused your gums to die, which can sometimes result in a weakened jawbone and loose teeth.
• Your wisdom teeth need to be removed. This specialized procedure can often be completed by Dr. Ross for thousands less than a specialist.

1. During an initial exam, our team will take X-Rays of your mouth to examine the tooth in question and observe any bone loss.
2. At your extraction appointment, local anesthesia numbs the area around the tooth. When necessary, we can also offer other sedation options.
3. Your dentist will loosen your tooth and carefully remove it from its socket. Depending on the condition, location, and size of your tooth, we may also make small incisions in your gum in order to safely remove the tooth.
4. The socket is cleaned.

In some cases, we might add stitches to the site of the extraction or add a bone graft to promote bone health in your jaw.

Once your extraction is complete, it’s time to rest and let your mouth heal. Proper aftercare is just as important as the extraction itself.

When recovering from an extraction, you should use the gauze provided by our office to cover the site of the extraction. This promotes blood clotting and protects you from dry sockets, which can be a painful speed bump on the road toward healing. Once bleeding slows, you can remove the gauze.

Brush and floss with care, but don’t put your routine on pause. Your at-home oral hygiene routine will help you avoid infection and other complications. You might also need to take prescribed or over-the-counter painkillers.
